The Alternative Darkroom is a small darkroom based in the heart of the Cotswolds which offers a unique service for printing your digital images. After you send us a digital file from your smartphone, tablet or laptop we use modern technology to transform it into a negative and then hand-print it using traditional photographic processes that were developed in the late 19th Century.
A cyanotype is an original photographic process from the 1800's that gives a stunning Prussian blue print. By combining a negative of your digital image with hand made French paper that has been coated with photographic salts, a vintage contact frame and the sun, a unique print is created. This wonderful process has a beautiful range of blue shades which produces a visually stunning and contemporary image.
The Alternative Darkroom is run by Craig Austin FRSA who has over twenty years experience in photography. He worked as a professional photographer for magazines and record labels before becoming a photographic printer. Before moving to the Cotswolds to set up The Alternative Darkroom he ran the busy darkrooms at University of Westminster and taught alternative photographic processes, black & white and colour photographic printing. Craig still runs workshops and continues as a lecturer at both University of Westminster and Coventry University.
